| | desciption | In comparison to the 930, the front of the 935 is quite flat, since the head lights are mounted below the front bumper and instead air intakes were added. This improved the heavily needed down-force at the front axle. A further trademark of the Porsche 935 is the rear-wing, which is mounted upon the standard rear-wing of the 930. The breaks used in the 935 originally stemmed from the Porsche 917. The total weight is around 970 Kg.
The engine power of the 1976 Turbo with one single charger was around 433 Kw (590 HP). The 1977 version was equipped with a bi-turbo and the engine power was further increased and finally found its highlight in the legendary 1978 Moby Dick with 620 Kw (845 HP). However the cubic capacity was increased to 3211 cm³ and water cooled cylinder heads with a four valve technique were used. As a result the Moby Dick represented the most powerful car, that was ever developed by 911. The Top-Speed accounted for 366 km/h. In order to easily cope with the immense temperatures during races, the cylinder heads, besides being cooled with the classic air coolers, were additionally chilled with water.
A special version was the so called Baby. In 1977 it was used for demonstration purposes in the smaller divisions of the German Race Championships, in order to underline, that victories could also be achieved in these series. The cubic capacity was halved to 1425cm³, the engine power was decreased to 272 Kw (370 HP) and the weight was reduced to 750 Kg. After debuting at the Norisring the Baby won the Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring against the Turbos of BMW and Ford. After completing the mission the Baby ended up in the Museum.
The Porsche 935 dominated the Group 5 races between 1976 and 1981. The car immediately won the World Championship in its debut year (together with the Porsche 936 in the Sports car World championship). Due to the customer teams this success was repeated in 1977. Well known 935 drivers were Jacky Ickx, Jochen Mass, Klaus Ludwig, Rolf Stommelen, Manfred Winkelhock and especially Bob Wollek, who never became a factory driver.
